Rooted Wednesdays Vol. 21 Gentle reminder: you're not behind

Whats On My Hair & My Heart

Wash days have been taking longer lately, and I think this time last year that would’ve frustrated me.

I was actively trying to make wash days as quick and efficient as possible because I didn’t want women to think wash days took all day. As if they were a waste of time. I wanted to show women, “Look, it doesn’t have to take that long.”

And that’s true. Especially if you stay consistent.

However, wanting to save time eventually turned into rushing. And rushing had me missing the whole point of wash day and haring them with you.

The point is promoting consistent time for yourself no matter how long it’ll take. The point is learning how pouring care into your hair helps it flourish.

The point is taking the time to let water run through your scalp and realizing it can calm your nervous system, bring you back to yourself, maybe even introduce you to yourself in ways you hadn’t experienced before.

The point is realizing that learning to take your time with your hair can teach you how to take your time with yourself.

Weekly wash days take time. They take sacrifice. They take adjustments.

And when you stay with them long enough, you’ll eventually jump timelines. Not all at once, but soon enough.

Growth becomes visible. Goals seem reachable. You’ll receive unexpected gifts along the way.

For a long time, I would look at the vision I had in my head as the end goal. And as long as I wasn’t living inside that vision, it felt like I was behind.

I’m teaching myself to let go of that narrative because the only person saying I’m behind is me.

Really, I’m just in the present moment and not the future.

And maybe that’s enough.Maybe the work isn’t getting to the future as quickly as possible. Maybe the work is learning how to fully be here until it arrives.

from my wash day to yours,
Jasmine
