Rooted Wednesdays Vol. 31 When the dream becomes normal

on my hair...

While I’m still grieving a season where it seemed* like my hair was thriving more than is it now, I feel like I’m slowly getting back into the routine of simply caring for and enjoying my hair.

*and I say seemed because nostalgia has a way of rewriting history in a way that'll make you feel like you're missing something in the present.

This week, my hair is feeling extra soft after pre-pooing with flaxseed and rosemary that I boiled into a gel, then shampooing with [this] and deep conditioning with [that](both soooo good).

I followed that with the leave-in and gel from Pattern’s Indigo Rainline and put my hair into six braids, waiting until they were completely dry before taking them down for a braid-out.

Honestly, it feels like the perfect style to get me through the week. No extra styling, tugging, or pulling. Just a soft hold and moisturized texture while I continue finding my way back to my hair goals.

on my heart fasho...

Goals are funny. It can feel like going down a slide to make them, but running uphill to work toward them. Hair goals, life goals, weight goals, relationship goals. There is always something we’re tending to.

And then sometimes we finally reach the goal and barely even notice because the thing we once dreamed about has become normal.

Years ago, one of my biggest hair goals was simply to have the confidence and skill to wear and style my natural hair. I wanted to know my hair. To be able to care for it, style it, and actually enjoy it.

I’ve accomplished that now, and somehow it no longer feels like I’m living in a dream I once craved. It just feels like my life.

I think that’s been reminding me to be careful about constantly living for the next result.

There are still things I’m working toward. There are versions of my life I’m deeply anticipating. But I don’t want to spend so much time trying to get there that I miss what I once dreamed to have here.

Maybe part of reaching our goals is learning how to maintain them. But maybe another part is remembering to actually enjoy them.

What’s stopping you from living the life you’re supposedly building all this for?

Thank you for reading,
Jasmine
