Rooted Wednesdays Vol. 32 Maybe boring is exactly what you need

What's on my hair?

A puff—a curly-haired Black girl classic. A pineapple, or fineapple when you’re really feeling it.

Lately, I’ve been wearing mine so much that I’m tired of seeing it. And we all know how quickly a Black girl will escape her hair when it starts feeling too boring, too much, or ironically not enough.

Oh, how easy it has become to choose escapism before dealing with a feeling. Or simply living with it for a while.

But I’ve been living with the puff. One, because switching up my style isn’t in the budget right now. And two, because boring can be perfect for length retention. When we’re talking low manipulation, boring is sometimes necessary. It’s welcomed.

(what's on my heart)

I’ve noticed how quickly I want to kick an uncomfortable feeling to the curb before allowing it to settle. I’m learning that letting those feelings stay awhile may actually be the quickest way through them. Even asking why they’re here has answered questions I thought getting rid of them would solve.

The boring, classic puff doesn’t seem so bad once I realize that sometimes it’s exactly what I need: low pressure, low manipulation, a little surrender.

A little breathing room can do a whole lot once you’re on the other side of it.

Until next Wednesday,
Jasmine

P.S. If your hair has been feeling a little boring too, I made a whole video about why that might actually be a good thing. Come join the conversation over on YouTube. 🤎
